Kansas City Sausage to Open Plant, Create 177 Jobs

Officials say Cumberland County leaders have helped Kansas City Sausage partner with swine powerhouse Smithfield Foods to open a sausage production plant that will create 177 jobs in Sampson County.

CLINTON, N.C. (AP) — Officials say Cumberland County leaders have helped Kansas City Sausage partner with swine powerhouse Smithfield Foods to open a sausage production plant that will create 177 jobs in Sampson County.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Kansas City Sausage plans to develop a 90,000-square-foot production plant. The plant, which will include operations from slaughtering through the finished product, will process between 700 and 1,000 hogs per day.

John Swope, executive director of the Sampson County Economic Development Commission, says the plant was made possible with help from Cumberland County officials. Swope says the project is a joint venture between two established companies.

Construction of the plant is expected to begin immediately and be completed by June 2016.
