OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) — Oshkosh Defense is one of three companies selected to make a prototype combat vehicle for the U.S. Department of Defense, with hopes of ultimately winning the final contract.

Oshkosh Defense will initially get $56 million to build 22 "joint light tactical vehicles" and deliver them within one year. The government will test versions of the vehicle over the next 15 months and decide which company will get the contract.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports (https://bit.ly/P5sXaL ) that if Oshkosh Defense is chosen, it could mean roughly $13.75 billion in Defense Department contracts.

The new vehicles are expected to replace Humvees for U.S. ground forces. The prototypes are lighter and have improved technology and protective gear.

The contract will not result in new jobs at this time.
