WASHINGTON (PRNewswire-USNewswire) — There's no confusion among consumers when it comes to understanding the unique role that confections can play in a happy, balanced lifestyle, and they are choosing their moment to enjoy them in moderation, according to the National Confectioners Association.

Most people in the U.S. enjoy candy about twice per week, averaging about 40 calories per day from confectionery items. Chocolate, candy, gum and mints account for less than 2 percent of the average American's overall caloric intake, and an average of about one teaspoon of added sugar per day – according to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

"Americans understand that candy is fun and transparent treat that can be enjoyed in moderation as part of a happy, balanced lifestyle," John Downs, president and CEO of the National Confectioners Association, said. "As a father and grandfather myself, I can relate to families around the country who embrace the unique role candy plays in family traditions and celebrations. I applaud the moms and dads who teach their children solid nutrition habits and the importance of moderation."

June is National Candy Month, and the National Confectioners Association will be helping Americans celebrate by highlighting innovation in chocolate, candy, gum and mints, and spotlighting the men and women who make the special treats that have played an important and unique role in cultural traditions and seasonal celebrations for thousands of years.

"The companies that make chocolate, candy, gum and mints are constantly developing new products and packaging, as consumers increasingly expect more transparency when it comes to calorie counts and ingredients in what they eat and drink," Downs said. "From front-of-pack calorie labels that put information right at consumers' fingertips to creating a wide variety of options that can bring a little enjoyment to any occasion, we are providing consumers with the information, support and options they need to make the choices that are right for them."

The National Confectioners Association is the trade organization representing the $35 billion U.S. confections industry. NCA and its members value the fun and enjoyment of chocolate, candy, gum and mints, serving as a transparent and trustworthy source while building and promoting a responsible industry. As the leading trade association for the industry, NCA is proud of the role it plays in the public's understanding and appreciation of candy's unique role in a happy, balanced lifestyle.
