The USDA announced it will expand limits on fat, sugar, sodium and calories in foods sold in schools during the school day. The new restrictions will be imposed on all foods sold in schools — including food sold in the cafeteria line and through vending machines.

Margo Wootan, with the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which has lobbied in favor of the rules, said,

"It's not enough for it to be low in problem nutrients, it also has to provide positive nutritional benefits. There has to be some food in the food."
