Production Resumes At Pa. Candy Factory

CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) -- Production has resumed at a landmark candy factory near Pittsburgh, where fire destroyed part of a packaging area and smoke damaged the operation's retail store and ice cream parlor last week.

Friday's fire at Sarris Candies in Canonsburg remains under investigation, though it's expected faulty wiring is to blame. The fire broke out in a second-floor packaging area, but most of the production area was unaffected. Nobody was hurt in the fire, which began about 7 a.m.

The federal Food and Drug Administration must clear the retail store to reopen after it is cleaned and restored. That's expected to take about a month. The ice cream parlor may remain closed for months.

Most of the company's seasonal candies were stored in an off-site warehouse, so Valentine's Day and Easter candies are being delivered on schedule.
