NEW DELHI, Aug. 1 (Kyodo) — Indian police on Wednesday arrested 10 senior union officials in connection with the labor strife at a car plant of Japanese-Indian carmaker Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the Press Trust of India news agency said.
The report said the top union leader at the Maruti Suzuki plant in Manesar, Haryana State, was among those detained by local police investigating the case.
Police had previously arrested two senior union officials, and with the arrests on Wednesday, the entire leadership of the Manesar plant union is behind bars.
Workers at the Manesar plant ransacked and set fire to plant facilities on July 18 after the management refused to reinstate a male worker suspended for hitting a supervisor, who reportedly used discriminatory language toward him.
Maruti Suzuki, a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corp., has closed the plant pending a police investigation into the violence, in which a senior plant official was burned to death and about 100 managers and supervisors were injured.
