When people hear their food is often “irradiated,” they think of nuclear fallout, or something equally unappetizing. The debate over the mertis of irradiation, including its safety, has raged on for years. Listen to one side of the story, from Sadex Corporation, out of Sioux City, Iowa.
According to Sadex, using irradiation to sanitize food before being shipped to consumers is no different than exposing it to sunlight, which is another form of radiation. The thing is, other forms of sanitization, such as cooking or freezing, just aren’t enough when it comes to the strict rules set down by U.S. regulatory bodies. Plus, the last thing any company needs is a massive recall for an E. coli or Listeria contamination, not to mention the danger to consumers.
