A full line of Positorq® oil shear tension control brakes from Force Control Industries provide simple, precise torque control over the entire speed range, even down to 0 rpm. Operational speeds are precisely controlled without chatter, stick slip or torque variation – thus eliminating marking during leveling, polishing and coating. Torque is controlled by pneumatic or hydraulic actuation pressure and is independent of speed. Sizes range from 53 Lb. Ft. up to 300,000 Lb. Ft., with continuous heat absorption capability up to 3000 thermal horsepower. Positorq® Oil Shear brakes are ideal for tension control applications such as unwind stands in steel mills, where very high torque is required at very low speed.

Oil Shear technology eliminates normal maintenance and adjustment, allows smooth operation, and lasts up to 10-times longer than standard dry friction brakes, making them ideal for many industrial applications. Totally enclosed housings make these brakes a trouble-free solution for steel mills because the enclosed housing reduces wear and torque changes due to moisture, scale and chips in the friction material.

Oil Shear Technology Makes the Difference

Oil Shear Technology is the reason brakes by Force Control do not need maintenance, adjustment, disc replacement, and last up to 10 times longer than standard friction brakes. Unlike dry brakes, oil shear technology utilizes a film of transmission fluid between the brake disc and the drive plate. As the fluid is compressed, the fluid molecules in shear transmit torque to the other side. Since most of the work is done through the fluid molecules in shear, wear is virtually eliminated, which eliminates the need for adjustments, common in dry braking systems.

Recirculation System Puts the Fluid “Where it’s Needed – When it’s Needed”

In addition to transmitting torque, a patented fluid recirculation system assures the fluid is
continually flowing through the friction area and carrying the heat to the housing for dissipation. This eliminates the major problem of heat buildup in the friction area of traditional dry brakes. Along with heat removal and torque transmission, the fluid serves to continually lubricate all components of the oil shear brake including bearings and splines, elongating overall service life of all of the internal components.

With noise levels below 50 dB Positorq® brakes are quiet enough for operators to work comfortably in the same area.

Compact, Low Inertia, with High Thermal Capacity

Since the effective radius, number of discs and friction factor remains constant, the torque available is directly equivalent to the actuation pressure (air or hydraulic) furnished to the actuating piston. With multiple braking surfaces, the Positorq® brake is not only compact but also low inertia for quicker response. A separate forced lube cooling system for high thermal applications allows for a compact brake with extraordinarily high thermal capacity.

Smooth, consistent actuation with low piston hysteresis is experienced by the use of Teflon liners over the O-rings to seal the non-rotating piston. This eliminates stick slip often associated with O-ring seals and eliminates roll up of the O-ring that causes cracking or breaking.
