OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (AP) — The Desoto County Board of Supervisors has rejected a proposal to build a gravel mine pit in the county.

WREG-TV (https://bit.ly/2d7Fn0x ) reports that the board voted unanimously Tuesday to deny Standard Construction from building the proposed gravel mining operation.

Standard Construction said during the board meeting that the mine would help the county by making construction materials locally available and less expensive.

Residents had argued that the mine's construction would hurt property value, create noise and hamper traffic.

Standard Construction didn't respond to a request for comment from the news agency. It's unclear if the company will continue to pursue construction of a gravel mine in the area.
