LANSING, N.Y. (AP) — A central New York salt mine remains idle four days after 17 miners had to be rescued when an elevator got stuck 900 feet below ground.
Mark Klein, a spokesman for Minneapolis-based Cargill Inc., says work at the company's mine in Lansing is shut down for a fifth day Monday as inspectors try to determine what caused a mine shaft elevator to malfunction at the start of the worker's overnight shift late Wednesday night.
A mobile crane was brought in to lower a rescue basket to the miners, who were all brought to the surface by 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Crews planned to use the crane to remove the elevator from the shaft so it could be inspected, but that work was put on hold Friday.
Klein says "it's too early to say" when the mine will reopen.
