NEW YORK, Sept. 10 (Kyodo) — U.S. beverage giant Coca-Cola Co. has begun selling its flagship drink Coca-Cola in Myanmar for the first time in about 60 years, the company said Monday.

The move follows easing of economic sanctions by the United States and European countries in response to the Myanmar government's democratization efforts in recent years.

The company plans to start local production of the beverage as soon as possible, it said, adding that it is working towards establishing a bottling entity there with a local soft drinks company.

"We are privileged to once again have the opportunity to play a role in building a better future with the people of Myanmar," Coca-Cola Chief Executive Officer Muhtar Kent said on his visit to Yangon, the country's largest city.

Coca-Cola products are being sold at more than 200 countries and regions around the world. Myanmar was one of the few remaining areas where the company's products were not available.
