SPRING HILL, Tenn. (AP) -- A planned idling of the General Motors auto assembly plant in Spring Hill has been extended from five weeks to eight weeks.
The shutdown will extend through July 24, then resume for the week of Aug. 10.
The Tennessean quoted GM spokesman Chris Lee in reporting workers are scheduled to come back in July to complete the switchover from the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse models to the 2010 edition.
Assembly of the Traverse, however, will be shifted to a GM plant in Lansing, Mich., in November.
The Spring Hill plant -- originally constructed to build the Saturn brand vehicles -- is one of three GM plants to be considered to build a new small car.
United Auto Workers Local 1853 Chairman Michael Herron said he's concerned about the uncertainty and hopes union members can get back to work soon.
