SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Testing is scheduled for this week on a site formerly owned by Ford Motor Co. in suburban Detroit where chemical solvents have been found.
The Detroit News reports environmental consulting company Dragun Corp. plans to test the 200-acre site of the former plant in Macomb County's Shelby Township for trichloroethylene and trichloroethane. Both are potentially hazardous substances and can lead to health problems.
The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reported cleanup could cost $57 million. The ex-Visteon Corp. plant formerly was known as Ford Utica Trim.
Another company owns the site, but Ford is responsible for soil remediation. Ford said in a statement that it is "committed to doing what is right for the community and the environment."
The automaker earlier tried to keep information about potential contaminants secret.
