Lockheed Martin Seeks Voluntary Layoffs Of 1,000 Aerospace Workers

The nation's top defense contractor plans to eliminate about 1,000 jobs in its aeronautics division.

Lockheed Martin announced this week that it would offer voluntary layoffs to mid-level employees at sites in California, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, Texas and West Virginia.

The company said that the reduction would help maintain competitiveness, secure new business and appropriately align infrastructure.

Although the company did not provide further details, The Wall Street Journal noted that the company recently lost out on an Air Force contract and dropped a challenge to a previous Army and Marine Corps vehicle contract that went to a competitor.

Lockheed employs about 126,000 worldwide.
