MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources has hired a former paper industry executive as its new chief state forester.

The DNR announced Fred Souba Jr.'s hire on its website Monday. Souba currently owns Provision Forestry LLC and has served as chairman of the Wisconsin Council on Forestry for seven years. He has served as vice president of Wood Supply and Sustainability for NewPage Corporation, which ran pulp and paper mills in Kentucky, Nova Scotia, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He also has served as vice president of Wood Supply U.S. for Store Enso North America.

Souba, who lives in Wisconsin Rapids, will start the job Nov. 14. He replaces Paul DeLong, who resigned to become senior vice president for conservation with the American Forest Foundation.
