BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — Dozens of workers at the Pennsylvania plant that makes marshmallow Peeps are back on the picket line after learning they permanently lost their jobs during the three-week strike.
The Morning Call of Allentown reports (http://bit.ly/2dO21eI) most of the 400 employees at Just Born Quality Confections went back to their jobs Monday, ending the walkout.
Bakery, Confectionary, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 6 offered to continue working under an expired contract and the company agreed.
Matt Pye, Just Born's vice president of corporate affairs, says workers knew they could be replaced.
Hank McKay, union president, says "there's no rhyme or reason" to the company's decision to permanently replace over 50 employees. That's about 12 percent of the striking workers.
Dozens — whose time on the job ranged from nine months to 38 years — are picketing Thursday.
