MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — Work continues to clear the site of the former Sappi paper plant in western Michigan for possible redevelopment.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1TBOPe3 ) property owner Melching Inc. has been working at the site along Muskegon Lake for more than four years and has demolished most of the former paper mill buildings.

Melching project manager Ken Callow says the company has been busy with other projects, so work at the mill site has slowed. Callow says negotiations are ongoing for a possible sale to local investors. If that happens, he says cleanup will speed up.

Callow says that negotiations also continue about plans to eventually remove two large smokestacks that remain at the site. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency halted planned demolition of the 275-foot stacks due to concerns about asbestos.
