BEIJING (AP) — The U.S. government has restricted the ability of one of China's biggest telecoms equipment makers, ZTE Corp., to use American components after concluding the state-owned company improperly exported U.S. technology to Iran.

The Commerce Department said sanctions that took effect Tuesday were imposed after ZTE and three other companies were found to be "acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests" of the United States.

The Commerce Department released documents it said showed ZTE knowingly violated controls on sales of U.S. high-tech goods to Iran and set up front companies to conceal that.
