GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) — The public has a chance to comment on permit applications for a proposed nuclear power plant in Cherokee County.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control has scheduled a public meeting on Thursday in Gaffney.

Officials are on hand to discuss wastewater discharge applications for Duke Energy's proposed Lee Nuclear Station. Duke plans to build the facility on the Broad River over the next decade.

At a public meeting last year, nearby residents welcomed the thousands of potential jobs to be generated by the plant but expressed worry about the risk of an accident that could spew radiation.
