JOHANNESBURG (AP) — One of South Africa's biggest mine unions says its members in the platinum industry have rejected an offer of a 9 percent pay increase and will continue striking.
Thousands of Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) members have been on strike for more than a week at three mines in the platinum-rich north-west region of the country.
AMCU said on Thursday the 9 percent offer was not close to a demand by workers of a minimum monthly salary of $1,137 (Rand 12,500).
Talks between the union and the companies, aimed at resolving the strike and mediated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, will resume on Friday.
Meanwhile, South Africa's Labor Court on Thursday ordered AMCU members in the gold mining sector not to go on strike.
