CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) — Dominion Virginia Power is being sued by an environmental group that says a coal ash pond at a former power plant is polluting groundwater.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Southern Environmental Law Center filed the lawsuit Thursday on behalf of the Sierra Club. The group had notified Dominion in December 2014 that it planned to sue the company under the Clean Water Act.
The lawsuit says coal ash ponds at the site of a former power plant in Chesapeake are leaking arsenic and other chemicals into the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and groundwater.
A Dominion spokesman says the company has worked closely with federal and state environmental compliance agencies and it disagrees with the allegations. He says the company will defend itself against the lawsuit.
