SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A small explosion Wednesday at a biotechnology lab in South San Francisco sent two workers to the hospital with minor injuries.
South San Francisco Fire Marshal Luis Da Silva said the "minor" explosion was reported at about 3:30 p.m. on the third floor of a lab at Amgen Inc. The building was evacuated as a precaution, authorities said.
The explosion did not ignite a fire, but two workers were transported to a hospital, the San Jose Mercury News reported (https://bit.ly/1dh1VsQ ). The details of their injuries were unknown, Da Silva said.
An Amgen representative could not immediately be reached for comment, the paper said.
Decontamination tents were set up for employees who may have been affected by chemicals or toxins that spread after the explosion.
The incident was the second to injure a worker at the facility in the last year, the newspaper said.
Thousand Oaks-based Amgen is the world's largest biotech drugmaker. It produces the popular osteoporosis drug Prolia and the rheumatoid arthritis medication Enbrel.
