DOVER, Del. (AP) — The Dupont Co. is fighting a subpoena from Vermont government officials for results of DuPont's research regarding the potential health and environmental impacts of the company's genetically engineered or modified crops, and associated herbicide and pesticide use on those crops.
Vermont officials are asking a federal judge in Delaware to compel DuPont to turn over the information. They are also asking that the dispute over the subpoena be transferred to federal court in Vermont, where trade groups representing food producers are fighting a new law requiring the labeling of foods containing genetically modified ingredients.
Vermont's first-in-the-nation law is set to take effect July 1, but the Grocery Manufacturer's Association is leading a court challenge claiming, among other things, that the labeling law violates the First Amendment and is unconstitutionally vague.
