This single-seat ultralight plane is the latest push toward the retro dream of flying cars.
The BlackFly from Canadian company Opener has an electric engine and can fly up to 62 miles per hour. It takes off and lands not quite vertically, and the company says it can touch down on either land or water with equal ease.
The company claims that under current rules it doesn’t require a person to have a pilot’s license to operate. The company boasts both that the controls are “intuitive” and that it has three fail-safe flight systems, just in case.
The vehicle is 13 feet, seven inches long and 13 feet, five inches wide, is made of carbon fiber, has a range of 25 miles, and charges like an electric car in a 120 or 240 volt outlet. Opener has been working on vehicles based on this concept since 2009 and performed the first manned flight in March of 2018.
