TOKYO, Dec. 14 (Kyodo) — Nissan Motor Co. has suspended the construction of a plant in Portugal for producing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles as the plant has turned out to be unnecessary for the immediate future, company officials said Wednesday.
The other plants, including a Japanese facility now in operation, and U.S., British and French facilities going onstream next year, are expected to meet demand for the EV batteries, they said.
Nissan had planned to invest 156 million euros, or 16 billion yen, in the Portuguese plant construction that started in February to annually provide lithium-ion batteries for 50,000 EVs, produced mainly by its French partner Renault S.A.
Nissan is considering how to use the facility under suspended construction, the officials said.
