ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Emerson Electric Co. said Monday that it acquired Johnson Controls Inc.'s marine container and boiler business to help expand its shipping business.
The company did not say how much it was paying for the unit.
St. Louis-based Emerson already has a division that makes thermostats and other air conditioning and refrigeration technology for homes and commercial customers. The Johnson Controls business makes refrigeration technology products that will benefit shipping companies and terminals, said Mark Dunson, an executive with Emerson's Climate Technologies unit, including products that monitor containers' refrigeration conditions. That can help keep perishable cargo, such as food, safe.
The products are installed on more than 650,000 containers and 2,200 ships. The new offerings will become part of the retail solutions business within Emerson's climate technologies division.
Johnson Controls, based in Milwaukee, makes batteries for autos, heating and air conditioning systems, and other products.
