Sanitation Worker Dies After Being Struck By Trash Bin

Authorities say a sanitation worker was killed when he was struck by a falling trash bin in western Pennsylvania.

JOHNSTOWN, PA — Authorities say a sanitation worker was killed when he was struck by a falling trash bin in western Pennsylvania.

Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees says 19-year-old Barry Miller of Summerhill was part of a three-person crew from Pro Disposal trying to empty a trash bin shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 2 outside the Alternative Community Resource Program in Brownstown.

Lees said Miller was next to the crew's truck operating a hydraulic system to hoist the container when the pulley slipped off as the contents were being emptied. The bin struck Miller, briefly pinned him against the vehicle. He died in the intensive care unit at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown just before 11 a.m. Monday.

Lees ruled his death accidental. The federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating.
