Samsung To Kill Off Remaining Galaxy Note 7 Devices Beginning Next Week

Samsung will update its recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones next week that will effectively eradicate the devices that remain in service in the U.S.

Samsung plans to issue an update for its recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones next week that will effectively eradicate the devices that remain in service in the U.S.

The Korean electronics giant said that the update, which will be deployed starting Dec. 19, will prevent those smartphones from charging and "eliminate their ability to work as mobile devices."

Samsung pulled the device off store shelves in September due to risks of overheating, fires or explosions.

Under an expanded recall announced last week, original or replacement Galaxy Note 7 owners can exchange their device for another Samsung smartphone or receive a refund. Customers were asked to power the phones down and contact their mobile carrier or the location of purchase.

Company officials said that more than 93 percent of the recalled devices in service in the U.S. were returned as of Friday.

A group of engineers last week said that a faulty design was to blame for the fire risk in the devices at that Samsung likely knew of the potential for problems.
