A California nut producer is recalling pistachios sold under the Wonderful, Paramount Farms and Trader Joe's brands due to possible salmonella contamination.

Wonderful Pistachios said that health officials were investigating 11 cases in nine states that could be linked to its pistachios. Salmonella can cause digestive illness and can be fatal to those with weakened immune systems.

The voluntary recall affects 23 varieties of pistachios identified by 13-digit codes on the packages. They were distributed in several retailers nationwide and in Canada, Mexico and Peru.

The company said that the recall is the first in more than 30 years of processing pistachios and that it "takes food safety matters very seriously and is working closely with health officials to identify the source of the problem."

Officials said that the company increased the frequency and size of its sample tests.

Consumers can either send labels to the company for a refund or return packages to the store where they purchased them.
