JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Cal-Maine Foods Inc. says it will buy the operations of Maxim Production Co., adding to its Texas egg operations.

Mississippi-based Cal-Maine will buy a feed mill and two egg production complexes that can hold 3.5 million laying hens, all located southeast of Houston, Texas. The purchase includes contract capacity for about 500,000 hens.

Cal-Maine expects to complete the purchase in November. It didn't disclose a price. It would be the 18th acquisition since 1989 for Cal-Maine, the nation's largest producer of shell eggs.

Cal-Maine paid $18.8 million in August for Texas egg operations of poultry producer Pilgrim's Pride, which had fewer than half the hens of Maxim. Cal-Maine will add Maxim's share of Texas Egg Products, which makes liquid and frozen egg products, to Cal-Maine's majority share of the plant.
