Public Hearing Held on Proposed Poultry Plant in Delaware

A public hearing was scheduled on Tuesday night regarding South Korea-based Harim Group's proposal to convert the old Vlasic Pickle site, located in Dagsboro, Del., into a processing plant that produces both raw and cooked poultry products.

MILLSBORO, Del. (AP) — Millsboro-area residents are getting a final chance to comment on plans to convert a former Sussex County pickle plant into a poultry processing facility.

A public hearing was scheduled Tuesday night on South Korea-based Harim Group's proposal to convert the old Vlasic Pickle site in Dagsboro into a processing plant producing both raw and cooked poultry products.

Harim bought Delaware-based poultry producer Allen Family Foods in 2011 after it filed for bankruptcy protection. State officials say the new plant would result in 700 jobs, and Gov. Jack Markell has touted it as part of his administration's job-creation efforts.

But some residents worry about air and water quality. They also have raised concerns about potential groundwater contamination from pollutants at the site, but officials suggest many of those concerns are unwarranted.
