Cargill To Close Corn Milling Plant

Cargill will close its corn milling plant in Memphis, Tennessee early next year, citing its location outside of the corn belt and under utilization.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Cargill will close its corn milling plant in Memphis, Tennessee early next year, citing its location outside of the corn belt and under utilization.

The milling plant has about 440 workers, with 120 of those being contract employees. Cargill has 143,000 employees in 67 countries.

Cargill said it will offer workers the chance to fill positions at some of its other locations in the region. Those that accept positions elsewhere will receive relocation assistance. Workers who do not take a job at another facility will receive severance packages as well as assistance landing a job elsewhere.

The privately held company said Tuesday that a corn oil refinery at the site will stay open and run as a stand-alone facility.

In July Cargill announced plans to close a Milwaukee beef-processing plant due to a cattle shortage. The plant had about 600 employees, who were told they could apply for work at other facilities in the region.
