LECHEE, Ariz. (AP) — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has scheduled five public hearings on proposals to control emissions from a coal-fired power plant on the Navajo Nation.
The hearings are set to begin Tuesday in LeChee and Page. Others are taking place throughout the week in Kykotsmovi (Key-COATS'-moh-vee), Phoenix and Tucson.
The EPA has proposed cutting haze-causing nitrogen oxide emissions at the Navajo Generating Station by 84 percent. The EPA's proposal gives the power plant's owners 10 years to install technology that would improve visibility at places like the Grand Canyon.
A group that includes the plant's operator has submitted an alternative plan that includes shutting down one of the three 750-megawatt units. It also sets a firm deadline for shutting down the largest coal-fired power plant in the West by 2044.
