MILWAUKEE (AP) — Wisconsin utilities will spend $1.2 billion to add pollution controls to some aging coal-fired plants and shut down others under a settlement with federal regulators.
The settlement filed in federal court in Madison on Monday also calls for the utilities to pay $2.45 million for violating air pollution laws over the years.
The deal calls for Madison-based Wisconsin Power & Light — the major player in the case — to shut down its coal-fired power plant on the Mississippi River in Cassville in western Wisconsin.
WPL spokesman Steve Schultz told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the company also will install additional pollution controls on one of two boilers at the Columbia power plant near Portage. It will upgrade plants in Sheboygan and Portage, which it owns with other utilities.
