Transformer Outside Of South Carolina Nuclear Plant Catches Fire

Duke Energy officials said the other two units at the plant near Seneca continued operations after the fire started Sunday afternoon.

Authorities say one unit of the Oconee Nuclear Station was shut down as a precaution after a transformer outside the plant caught fire.

Duke Energy officials said the other two units at the plant near Seneca continued operations after the fire started Sunday afternoon. No one was hurt and no evacuations were needed.

Charlie King with Oconee Emergency Services' fire division says the fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Duke Energy said in a news release that the fire was initially classified as an unusual event around 3:20 p.m. That was upgraded to an alert shortly before 5 p.m. because the blaze damaged a power line in the station's switchyard.

Duke said the alert was lifted shortly after 8 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
