Two wheel manufacturing plants in Iowa have been cited for improperly handling and storing hazardous waste at their facilities.
The Midwest branch of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday that compliance inspections of GKN Armstrong Wheels plants in Estherville and Armstrong revealed violations of waste regulations. The company agreed to pay a penalty of more than $150,000.
The EPA says the two GKN Armstrong Wheels facilities disposed of hazardous waste without an appropriate permit and didn't comply with waste generator requirements, meaning they didn't conduct hazardous waste inspections or properly label containers. The agency says the company also failed to adhere to universal waste and used oil regulations.
The Iowa sites produce steel wheels primarily for the agricultural and construction industries.
