Cargill Inc. says it plans to close its Springfield meat slicing and packaging plant and move the work to two other states.

The move will cost 118 people their jobs when the plant closes on March 11.

Cargill said in a news release that workers were informed of the move Friday. The work in Springfield will be moved to Nebraska City, Nebraska, and Waco, Texas. Cargill says some of the meat sliced and packaged in Springfield comes from those two cities.

The company says the workers will be offered a severance package and help relocating to other plants.

Cargill acquired the Springfield plant in 2008, along with other assets of Willow Brook Foods.
