“This is an excellent environmental accomplishment for our plant,” said Fran Montemurro, James River plant manager. “We are continually looking for ways to better protect the environment and reducing water usage is one way of accomplishing that.”
Fran said the plant was able to achieve the reduction based on the results of an elution study the plant conducted in partnership with GE. The study, led by site operator, Bob McDorman, and plant supervisor, Mike Shepard, determined that the water softener fast rinse time could be reduced from 50 minutes to 15 minutes without compromising water quality.
“Each year, our Water & Process Technologies reps work with customers to generate ongoing value through value generation projects,” said Justin Wray, account manager – GE Power & Water. “We recognize projects that strike a positive balance between today’s environmental challenges and industrial demands in relation to improving energy efficiency, environmental health and safety, water reuse and overall costs. The James River plant project definitely met these criteria.”
The James River plant, located in Chesterfield County, Va., began operation in 1947. The plant makes sulfuric acid products primarily used for Kelvar® aramid fiber production and gypsum used primarily as an agricultural fertilizer. The plant employs 30 full-time people.
