Accompanying Tom were Training Solutions’ Steve Zuckerman, director for the Public Sector, and Ron Hayes, a safety activist from Fairhope, Ala., whose 19-year-old son Patrick died while working in a grain silo in 1993. In 2004, Ron and his family participated in the making of the video.
“While statistics and news accounts around workplace safety incidents are sobering, I don’t believe that anyone who sees this video will forget Patrick Hayes and his family and the potentially live-saving messages they convey,” Tom said. “It is so important for people to understand what is at stake.”
His family’s tragedy prompted Ron to found The F.I.G.H.T. (Families in Grief Holding Together) Project, a nonprofit organization that helps families and workers deal with the grief and other consequences of workplace injuries and fatalities. One result of Ron’s advocacy is the creation of a policy, developed in cooperation with OSHA officials, designed to help the agency’s representatives who assist families of workers who have lost their lives on the job.
“I believe the video can provide OSHA officials who investigate workplace fatalities a better understanding of what these families go through and need,” Ron said. “I want to thank DuPont for the donation of the videos and its continued commitment and contributions to workplace safety.”
