Toyota, Peugeot Citroen Joint Plant Reduces Output

A car plant in the Czech Republic says it is reducing the working week and cutting a its third shift to address falling demand in Europe.

PRAGUE (AP) — A car plant jointly operated by Toyota Motor Corp. and PSA Peugeot Citroen SA in the Czech Republic says it is reducing the working week and cutting a shift to address falling demand in Europe.

Plant spokesman Radek Knava says the plant is set to reduce the working week to four days as of May and cancel the third shift.

Knava said Friday the company expects to produce about 221,000 cars this year, compared with 270,000 units last year.

The measure will affect some 150 jobs.

The plant — Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile — was opened in 2005 in Kolin, east of Prague, and designed to produce 300,000 units of small passenger cars — Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 — for the European market.
