3M Plant Celebrates 40 Years In Brookings

Since opening, the plant has more than doubled in size, employing 880 people with an annual payroll of $47 million, and making nearly 1,500 items.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) -- The 3M plant in Brookings is celebrating 40 years of business Saturday with an open house and tours.

The Brookings Register reports (http://bit.ly/qtmbmV) that the plant started in 1971 as a 250,000-square-foot tape and mask manufacturing facility with about 50 employees.

It has since more than doubled in size, employing 880 people with an annual payroll of $47 million. The plant now manufactures nearly 1,500 items.

Plant manager Mike Magnuson says it's an important milestone that's a tribute to the great work of all the people in the plant.

3M was founded in Two Harbors, Minn., in 1902.
