Authorities say a bus carrying nearly 30 passengers was ripped in two when it was hit by a cargo train in southeastern Brazil. At least nine people are dead.

Rescue workers say six died instantly when the train crashed into the bus and dragged it for nearly 100 meters (yards) in the late Wednesday accident in the city of Americana.

Authorities say more than 15 people are injured and at least five are hospitalized in serious condition.

The accident remains under investigation but police officer Silvio Dias tells Globo TV that the bus driver apparently missed a stop sign.
