Volvo Recalls 700 Workers

Swedish truck maker AB Volvo says it has decided to recall 700 workers at its New River Valley plant in Virginia, following an increase in demand.

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- Swedish truck maker AB Volvo says it has decided to recall 700 workers at its New River Valley plant in Virginia, following an increase in demand.

Volvo said its combined U.S. and Canadian retail sales volume increased by 47 percent through February, compared with the same period last year.

The recall will take place in several stages between May 2 and June 13. Volvo said it would ramp-up production at the plant, including adding a second shift.

Shares in Volvo rose 2.7 percent to 112.9 kronor ($17.7) in Stockholm.

Senior Vice President Ron Huibers said customer response to the company's products "continues to be extremely positive," which combined with the improved economy is helping its performance.

Volvo now has around 1,500 employees at New River Valley.
