Mitsubishi To Build Wind Turbine Plant In Arkansas

Wind-energy firm on Friday announced that it plans to build a $100 million wind-turbine manufacturing facility in west Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas Inc. says it plans to build a $100 million wind-turbine manufacturing facility in west Arkansas.

The Delaware-based corporation on Friday announced that it plans to begin construction on the Fort Smith facility by early 2011. The company said it plans to locate the plant in a new 200,000-square-foot facility on 90 acres of land formerly part of Fort Chaffee.

The plant is expected to employ as many as 400 people.

The company is the latest wind-energy firm to set up shop in Arkansas. Nordex USA last month broke ground on its wind-turbine plant in Jonesboro, a $40 million investment that's expected to grow to more than $100 million when it adds a windmill blade section. The plant is set to ultimately employ 750 people.
