More than 1,600 people have shown interest in working for startup automaker, V-Vehicle, in Monroe, La., even though applications will not be accepted for months.

MONROE, La. (AP) -- More than 1,600 people have shown interest in working for a startup auto manufacturer in Monroe, even though applications will not be accepted for months.

V-Vehicle Co. is converting the vacant Guide Corp. headlamp plant into an assembly plant. The company has released few details of its car, other than it will cost about $10,000 and get more than 40 miles per gallon.

The state has launched a Web site that provides email updates about the company and its hiring plans.

V-Vehicle has said it will hire a limited work force of fewer than 100 people for the startup of operations in next fall. The company says that will expand to 500 in early 2011 and eventually hit 1,400.
