Gerdau Ameristeel Closing Oklahoma Steel Mill

Steelmaker is planning to lay off 300 employees at its Sand Springs, Okla., steel mill and intends to close the facility for at least two years.

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. (AP) -- Gerdau (gur-DOE') Ameristeel is planning to lay off 300 employees at its Sand Springs steel mill and intends to close the facility for at least two years.

Company officials are also considering closing the plant permanently.

The mill will cease operations Oct. 16.

Company leaders are weighing options as they wait on an incentive package from the state of Oklahoma. But even if Gerdau decides to stay, it will need to shut down the plant for 24 months to make upgrades to meet environmental regulations.
