Delphi Plant Closing After 35 Years

Union official has confirmed that the last day of production at Delphi Saginaw Steering System's plant in Athens, Ala., will be June 26.

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) -- A union official has confirmed that the last day of production at Delphi Saginaw Steering System's plant in Athens will be June 26.

United Auto Worker President Vaughn Goodwin said a small decommissioning crew will stay longer to disconnect machines and clean up.

More than 2,000 people worked at Delphi's Athens operations before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2005. But many of those workers already have been lost due to buyouts.

The first plant of a three-plant automotive operation at Athens opened in 1975.
