Oregon Manufacturers Can’t Keep Up With Recyclers

State-mandated electronics recycling program is collecting too much junk too fast for the largest manufacturer group involved, prompting it to ask Oregon recyclers to slow down.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A state-mandated electronics recycling program is collecting too much junk too fast for the largest manufacturer group involved, prompting it to ask Oregon recyclers to slow down.

The Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Co., or MRM, recently warned Goodwill and other collectors that it won't pay if they participate in off-site recycling events put on by groups such as churches or neighborhood associations.

The Oregonian newspaper reports that MRM told the collectors to limit themselves to state-provided signs for advertising and not use freelance fliers for recycling televisions, computers, laptops and monitors under a state program that began Jan. 1.

MRM is backed by Panasonic, Toshiba, Sharp and 18 other television manufacturers in Oregon.
