Iowa Mill Fined For Lift Safety Inspections

Specialty grain processor Grain Millers Inc. faces state fines for failing to make timely checks on lift equipment used by an employee who died in July.

ST. ANSGAR, Iowa (AP) — A northern Iowa mill faces state fines for failing to make timely checks on equipment used by an employee who died in July.

Melanie Selken of Austin, Minnesota, was pronounced dead after co-workers found her at the bottom of a man lift, which transports people to different levels of the Grain Millers Incorporated plant in St. Ansgar.

Mary Bryant of the Iowa Occupational Safety and Health Bureau says it's not clear why Selken fell. But an agency report says the lifts were not inspected within an acceptable time frame.

The company has until January 29th to pay a $4,500 penalty, unless an appeal is filed.

Grain Millers, a specialty grain processor, has its headquarters in Eden Prairie.

Chief Executive Officer Craig O'Neal says the company has acknowledged the citation.
