Measure Mandates Flags' Origin

Massachusetts legislators want all American and state flags made in the U.S.; $5.3 million worth of American flags were imported last year.

BOSTON (AP) — Lawmakers want Massachusetts to buy American, especially when it comes to the Stars and Stripes.

Legislation supported by several dozen lawmakers would ensure that state agencies buy American flags from companies that manufacture them in the United States.

The measure is slated for a Statehouse hearing Tuesday.

Rep. Patricia Haddad says she filed the bill after a constituent complained he couldn't find a U.S. flag made domestically.

The Flag Manufacturers Association of America says $5.3 million in U.S. flags were imported last year — $5 million worth from China.

A few other states require its flags be made in the United States.

Massachusetts law requires the display of a U.S. and state flag at each public institution. Haddad's bill would cover state flags, as well.
